Tè verde

Tea, a drink that has spanned centuries and miles.

Tea is certainly one of the most popular and consumed drinks on the planet. Although there are legends that trace the discovery and use of tea back to protohistory, its history probably begins in China around the third century, initially used as a ritual beverage, and then ended up being known and used on a large scale throughout the Asian continent and quickly in the rest of the globe. The first mention of tea in a European text dates back to the 16th century, when the tea ceremony (Cha no yu) was developed in Japan. Contrary to what one might think, in Europe the first to consume tea was not the English, but the Dutch, who were the first to import it into the European and American continent at the beginning of the seventeenth century.

There are countless types of tea available on the market, but they all come from the same species, Camelia sinensis. The difference between the different types is mainly due to the post-harvest treatment carried out on the leaves. The name of the type of tea therefore depends on the oxidation of the leaves, so we will have green tea from unoxidised leaves, black tea from completely oxidized leaves, and an intermediate variant between the two oxidations called oolong. There may be other variants and names always given by the particular type of oxidation. While the name of the variant is usually given by the growing region, such as Darjeeling, black tea grown in the Indian region of the same name, or by other important factors such as Lu Mu Dan, which owes its name (“Green Peony”) to the characteristic shape in which the shoots are woven.

We are often used to preparing tea in the same way, regardless of type or variety. Actually, every tea releases the best of its characteristics if properly infused. Black tea loves a decidedly high water temperature (even over 90°), while green and white teas are best enjoyed when poured into water at temperatures not exceeding 70°/80°. The same goes for the infusion minutes, which, although varying from a few seconds to well beyond 10 minutes depending on the specific variety and traditions, should be approximately 1-2 minutes for green and white tea and 2-3 minutes for oolong and black tea.

In addition to its ceremonial and recreational uses, tea has also been an important protagonist of historical events. As in 1773, when in the port of Boston, in protest against British taxes, some American settlers poured all the cargoes of tea from ships. Even in literature, tea is often an important element, as in the case of “Alice in wonderland” Lewis Carroll, where the mad hatter and white rabbit are intent on drinking (or not drinking) tea. Or as in the novel “In Search of Lost Time” by Marcel Proust, where tea can even lift the mind and self-respect, to name just a few examples. And if it’s charm is unquestionable, tea is equally loaded with beneficial properties, some of which are scientifically proven. Theanine for example, with its psychoactive properties, is able to reduce stress and perhaps, although not yet scientifically proven, has a positive impact on the immune system.

So all we have to do is drink a good cup of tea, be it 5 pm, as the British or at any time it’s more congenial!
If you want to give a new touch to your tea infusions, you could use one of my custom tea infusers. Take a look at my shop.

What kind of tea do you prefer? Do you have your own personal tea ritual? Do you drink it straight, or with milk or lemon? Tell me about your relationship with this noble and ancient drink.

Dogs, cats and other pets: a little help for taking care of them

Dogs, cats and other pets are valuable life companions.
It is now well known and studied that living with a pet from an early age helps to reduce the onset of possible future allergies. They are used in pet therapy, to help adults and small patients. They are trained to assist people suffering from diabetes, so that they can see when a crisis occurs. The list of how valuable the company of a pet is could continue for a long time, but those who have had the good fortune of enjoying their company, know that there is no need for any “valid reason”, study or belief, just their presence. The warmth and the company they are able to give, often equal, or at times exceed, that of any human beings. Sometimes you just have to look at them as they sleep, play or do something tender or funny to improve your mood throughout the day.

I have two dogs, Iris and Nanà, one black and one white. Literally the yin and yang that complement and contrast each other at the same time. They go through from one extreme to the other: one loves the heat, the other the cold, one likes to go out late at night, the other would like not to have to put a paw out after sunset, one loves fish, the other runs away for the smell alone. Even physically, as well as for the colour, they are at odds, one is tall and slender, the other low and squat, but in terms of agility things are reversed: the slim one is awkward and the other surprisingly agile. One is almost as waterproof as the ducks, the other seems like a rag to be wrung after a single drop of rain. Whoever wants to follow me in this telematic adventure you will end up getting to know them better.

Having pets, dogs, cats, turtles or whatever else in one’s life, has innumerable and undeniable virtues, but taking care of them at its best implies a serious and not indifferent commitment.
Among these commitments, one of the most important is their diet. In a jungle of information given by veterinarians, experts in the field, the internet and word of mouth, you often end up in total confusion. But slowly we learn to manage this aspect in the best way, understanding what, and how much is suitable for our friends with two, four, eight legs(not only dogs and rabbits, even spiders can become faithful companions of adventures) or even none in the case of fish or snakes. XD Once I had identified what was best for my two pets the problem was solved. I travel by foot or by public transportation, regardless of the lack of efficiency of the latter, so it’s never easy to travel far and wide in search of the best quality and price for food or other articles for them, and then return loaded like Santa on Xmas Eve.

Amazon has really helped me. In addition it has recently opened a dedicated section on it’s website in www.amazon.it: Pets’ Products. However, following a friend’s suggestion, I have been using the Amazon Pantry service for a year now. As you must know, Amazon pantry is obviously not limited to animal products only, it’s almost entirely a home shopping service (with the exception of perishable foods).
To make it short: You have a box to fill as you add items to your cart, it increases the percentage of space occupied. Space is occupied differently by each product, according to its size, weight and fragility. For example: a bag of chips could occupy more space in percentage than a packet of dough, because it needs an adequate volume in order to arrive whole in our homes. Once you have reached 100% volume, more or less of what you need in your shopping cart, proceed with the order and within a couple of days at most your groceries will comfortably arrive at home. The cost of the box is €3.99(in Italy), but it is often reset to zero through promotions of various kinds, or by buying 5 products among those listed on the page: Pantry Promotion. (it is therefore often advisable to always check when there are products that are more suitable for your needs. I use it, as well as to buy food for my two dogs, also for “heavy” food to be transported, such as various boxes, preserves and so on and for some unhealthy snacks and chips, because in addition to being comfortable as a service, it also has rather competitive prices.

So if it’s not easy for you to carry kilos and pounds of pet food or just want to enjoy the convenience of having everything you need at home, without effort and without wasting time between various shops and supermarkets, I recommend you try it. It really made a difference for me.

In addition, as you can see from the photos, I’m not the only one to appreciate the comfort of the service :-p

As you get to know the stories of Iris and Naná better, I would like to learn about your pets! Do you have a pet? What is it’s name? Does it fly, walk, jump, crawl, swim,….? And if you don’t share your life with any pet, what would you like with you? 🙂

Orecchini e Phone strap boccino Harry Potter

Harry Potter Golden Snitch style earrings and Phone strap

Golden Snitch is a special ball used in the magical Quidditch game by Harry Potter, now you can always bring one with you like the Earings or the Phone strap.

For those who don’t know what Quidditch is: it’s a magical sport in the fantastic Harry Potter universe created by the writer J. K. Rowling. It is played on a flying broom, on an oval field in which three circles are placed at the end, similar to rugby.
Balls with different peculiarities are present in the field:

  • The Quaffle, red leather ball that is used to score points by passing it through one of the three circles at the end of the field.
  • The Bludgers, iron balls that serve to hinder players and even unravel them to make the game more difficult.
  • Our dear Golden Snitch, a magical winged ball of very small size and very fast in movements. If captured it gives the right to 150 points, declaring the victory of the team.

Seven players are needed for each team:

  • 3 Chasers, with the task of launching the Quaffle into the opponent’s rings.
  • 2 Bathers, engaged in the defence of his companions from the Bludgers. They are armed with a bat and sometimes they can use the Bludgers to their advantage by directing them towards the players of the rival team.
  • 1 Keeper, with the aim of defending their rings from the quaffle pitched by the other team.
  • 1 Seeker, tasked with chasing and grabbing the elusive Golden Snitch.

The most complete book on Quidditch is the pseudobiblion (a book that doesn’t really exist but is mentioned in a real book)”The Quidditch through the ages” later written for charitable purposes by J. K. Rowlins in 2001.
There is also a “Muggle” (people without magical powers and often unaware of the magical presence in the world) version of Quidditch in the real world. Since 2005, Vermont’s Middlebury College has been playing it as a sport in all respects and spread it to an almost global level, with tournaments and championships. So if your dream has always been to play, in a way, you might be able to make it happen! For more information, you can take a look at Quidditch page on Wikipedia, where you can also find some international teams.

But to capture the Golden Snitch it is not necessary to play Quidditch, nor to chase it for long and wide. Simply go to my Shop on-line and choose the version you prefer the most, among the Earings or Phone Strap. To create them I used ceramic beads, which thanks to their shine reproduce the effects of the Golden Snitch. Share your passion for Harry Potter with me and the rest of the world with these articles, and if you haven’t yet entered the magic world of Harry Potter, what better time to do so?

memo frame

Memo frame: the fanciful whiteboard

Memo frame? My memory is strange, I remember conversations literally for years, if you tell me “let’s meet here in six years at 6pm”, I will remember it exactly. I can tell you precisely how you were dressed that day eight months ago, but on the contrary I could easily leave home without a bag, or forget where I was going or what I was doing at the time I was doing it.
To try to fill this gap, I thought of using a whiteboard as a memo, but often they are too big or need to hang on the wall. Living in a small apartment I opted for a memo frame instead of the classic blackboards. Easy to use on any surface, in case you need to keep an eye on the memo and absolutely customizable according to your taste or the furnishing of your home or office.

If you also want to add style to your memo boards by doing away with the usual blackboards and cork panels, follow my video tutorial and you won’t risk leaving your home or office forgetting what you needed. (Our head is attached, no memo is necessary, so as not to loose it, just check it occasionally :-p).

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • A frame. I used FISKBO from IKEA, but you can use any frame of your choice that best suits your ambience and style.
  • Decorative paper. You can use anything, like rice paper or newspaper, free your imagination.

TIPS AND TRICKS
To make the memo frame more eco-friendly, you can use recycled paper:

  • I, for example, used an old gift bag that I had saved. It can be both a good way to recycle and reuse a paperl you liked but couldn’t have used differently;
  • You could use a larger frame to hang on the wall, so that beside a memo board you also have a modern and original piece of art when it’s not used for memos:
    memo frame wall
  • don’t limit it to the wall! You can attach it to the door, with extra strong tape like Pattex “No More Nails” Adhesive Tape. I have created another medium size memo frame to attach to the closet door, the result is certainly impressive and undoubtedly very useful.
  • to write on memo frame you can use any erasable marker pen for whiteboards, but for a more particular touch I suggest to use the erasable chalk effect markers such as these Stationery Island Chalk

Tissue box Super Mario

SuperBox: Super Mario tissue box

How many times we have had to live in close contact with a tissue box, especially during a seasonal illness, to get bored of always seeing the usual monotonous writing.
I therefore thought of giving the package a new look, transforming it into a Super Mario block.

If you want to try it yourself follow my video tutorial to create your tissue box.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • A square box of tissues.
  • Glue stick.
  • Acrylic Colors.
  • Brushes.
  • White cardboard.

TIPS AND TRICKS
Once the tissues are finished, you could reuse the “super box” as:

  • container, perhaps to contain the 3DS game cards (or old GameBoy cards)
  • piggy bank, to recall even more the blocks of the legendary Super Mario!
problem pillow case

Problem pillow: the do it youserself pillow

During a shopping trip I saw a wonderful T-shirt with the inscription “problem maker“, perfect for me if not for the small detail that it did not fit me. Despite this I couldn’t leave it, so it came to my mind that it could become an excellent pillow and given the low price I bought it: hence the name “problem pillow” 🙂

If you too have found a favorite T-shirt but it’s not your size, or if you don’t want to get rid of an old companion of adventures, following my video tutorial you can easily turn it into a pillow case.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • A pillow.
  • A t-shirt.

TIPS AND TRICKS
To do the “problem pillow” I used the sewing machine, but if you prefer:

nutellamp lamp nutella

Nutellamp: Lamp and Nutella combination

Finishing a can of Nutella is certainly a disheartening moment, I tried to make the event more “radiant” transforming it into a lamp better defined as “Nutellamp” 🙂

Besides being useful and functional, it’s a great way to recycle, so if you want your “Nutellamp” you can follow my video tutorial and once you have finished a jar of Nutella (so it will be very easy: -p), you won’t have to roll up your sleeves.

MATERIALS NEEDED

TIPS AND TRICKS
You can use “Nutellamp” in a variety of ways:

  • as night light around the house;
  • to give a special touch to the kitchen;
  • as a dining centre for breakfast;
  • by filling it with marbles or other decorative elements, so as to create a play of light when switched on and give it more character when turned off.
magnetscrews

Magnetscrews: personalized magnets for your fridge

Have you ever had a post-it or cards sticked to the refrigerator by a piece of scotch or holiday souvenir magnets? It happens very often to me, so I decided to make simple personalized magnets that work a bit like the classic cork board tips.
I had the idea of “magnetscrews” to give to the refrigerator and the wall board an even more interesting look!

Following my video tutorial you can easily make the “magnetscrews” to restyle your desk or as a gift to someone who loves DIY.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Flat-tipped screws: Easily available from hardware stores or in a home depot.
  • High sealing glue: I have used the B-7000 but the Attak or similar is fine.
  • Magnet: I used those in neodymium, because they have more magnetic power than ferrite in the same size. You can find them online (Magnet Expert High Grade N42 (NdFeB) Neodymium Magnet), in the hobbies store or model shops.

ITPS AND TRICKS
For an even more interesting effect of “magnetscrews“:

  • you could give the screws a touch of colour buying them already coloured like Viti Pig: Neon Skewers 1″ Phillips;
  • you could give the screws a touch of colour by tinting them with the spray can;
  • if you have a magnetic surface, such as a clipboard, you can use the screws directly without the magnet, which will make the “screwed” effect even more realistic.
damaged bag

Damaged bag: How to repair the magnetic closure

A few months ago, I bought a bag that started to deteriorate on the magnetic closure after very little time. I was sorry to have to throw it away because the rest was still in a very good condition, so I thought to cover the damage magnetic closure with a charm.

If you too have a bag with a damaged closure, you can use this small expedient to hide the defect and make it even more interesting and personal. Following my video tutorial you can give a new life to your damaged bag.

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • Bag: damaged or to be customized.
  • Pendant: you can use one you have at home, buy it online or in a hobby shop.
  • Glue: The E6000 Multi Purpose Adhesive would be the most suitable. I used the B-7000 which is just as good, but you can use any elastic seal glue, so as to ensure that the pendant does not comes off with the movements of the fabric or if you pull it accidentally.

To repair and personalize your damaged bag you could:

dreamcatcher necklace

Dreamcatcher Necklace: a new start full of positive energy

Dreamcatcher Necklace: this is a special post because I consider it the official launch of my online Shop – Now You 2 and, in general, my Now You 2 project which I refer to in my presentation page.

The first article that I propose and that I put on sale, in the hope of a good start, is the
Dreamcatcher Necklace.

It’s a stainless steel necklace, with beads and colored tassels, entirely assembled by hand, that’s inspired by the ancient tradition of dream catchers: notoriously attributed to the Native Americans. From recent studies it seems that they were also present in the Indies several centuries before. It is said that dreamcatchers have the ability to attract positive energies and drive away negative ones, to preserve good dreams, keeping nightmares and nefarious thoughts at bay.
Although their existence is probably more pragmatic than we believe, the appeal they evoke in us is undeniable and very often what counts is the hope, and the positive thought that a given thing can work; so the dream catcher can serve as a catalyst for a newfound optimism or to instill confidence that a current nightmare can change into a shining dream. So, in addition to wearing it on every occasion, it is excellent as a gift for a special friend.
